Let us begin our devotion with a prayer.
Gracious father we thank you for another time of praise and worship and fellowship with you. A time that we can say that you have come to renew our strength, a time that we can say you have come to mend all our wounds, a time that we can say that we have experienced the real deal. Thank you for those of us reading this and thank you for those who will read this. We pray you call us by name today. Please reveal your deep truth unto us even as we start another journey this week. We bless your name and we honour you in Jesus mighty name, Amen.
Relationship and Forgiveness
Beyond all relationships, learn to forgive one another.
There are two key words, Relationship and Forgiveness. You cannot forgive a cat neither can you forgive a dog. You have to learn to forgive human beings and that is a big deal to the Lord.
For us to be able to see and experience the things of what God has in store for us this year, we have to be people that build relationships, we have to be people who do not fight against relationships, we have to be people who learn to let go, forgive and move on. And those who would hold us behind, we’ll tell them that, sorry yesterday is gone, today is a brand-new day, Amen.
Beyond all relationship learn to forgive one another.
We cannot forgive our pet because the pet pooped on the wrong place but we have to learn to forgive human beings.
Hebrews 10:24-25.
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
A True Friend
Now, who is a true friend? In order for us to forgive, we must know know who a friend is and we have to learn to forgive a friend. As we are talking about relationships, who is a true friend?
A true friend is not only an honest person or somebody who is honest about themselves but they are also honest about you.
A true friend is able to have difficult conversations with you, probably things that you will not be eager to hear. There are certain things that people cannot tell you, they don’t want to bite their tongue but they know it is wrong but they have to tell you. They do not tell you because they despise you but rather because they love you. So, if you see your friend doing anything wrong tell them because you love them no matter how difficult the issue is. How do you know this is a true friend?
- They notice the little things about you.
A true friend is the one is able to notice the very little details about you. Therefore, a true friend is someone who will be able to spot what his neighbour doesn’t do correctly. - A True friend should show up when it matters, when you are in crisis. When nobody comes to indemnify you, they must be there for you in thick and thin.
- True friends should not keep you hanging, when everybody thought it was too late, they must be there and believe in you no matter what. They should follow up on you and they must always keep tabs on you.
- True friends are people you can tell everything to.
- They applaud your success because they believe if I succeed then they will also succeed.
There was once a tennis match between the Serena sisters, it was big news because we al believed the 2 sisters were really going to beat each other. The little Sister won and the big sister lost the tennis match.
The media came after the match to interview both sisters, when the big sister was interviewed, she said it was a William that won the match and because she is a family member, pride was brought to the family. This was the statement that Serena’s big sister made so think about it and applaud your friend too when time is due. - A true friend is not threatened by your success.
Even though it is not them, they feel good because they are friends with you. Finally, a true friend is not self sufficient, they know that they depend on you and you also depend on them. They lean on each other, if you a true friend or you want to be a true friend, learn to lean on one another.
The Power of God’s Love to Forgive
Jesus dying on the cross according to Luke 23, stresses the point that, remember, no matter how bad your wrong doings were, they cannot separate us from God’s love. God commanded his love for us meaning that while we were still sinners, Christ loved us. His love took his child to the cross to die for us. He did not use any instrument to wash away our sins, our sins cost blood and he did this selflessly for us because of his love for us. Jesus should be in your mind this year.
Now listen, my friend, when I am dead your tears will flow but I will not know your cry, When I am dead, I know you will send some flowers but I will not see them so if you have any flowers to give me, please give them to me while I am alive, do not wait until I am dead and gone before you send me flowers.
Appreciate Others Now
Learn to say words of praise because now I am alive and I can hear. When you say pastor, I just appreciate the way you talk and the way you encourage us. I want to hear them while I still live and breathe, do not wait till I am dead and gone. Praise me now because a time is coming that I will not hear them again.
I am a human being, I have faults so please tell me my faults now, don’t wait until I’m dead and gone then you tell people you wished you corrected me. Now that I’m alive, spend time with me and don’t come and say you wished you could have spent time with me.
Now is the time because we are talking about building a relationship. When I am dead and gone you will find a way to my house and say condolences but we have not even spoken in years. You know there are some family members who you haven’t even called in years but when they are dead and gone, you find a way to visit them and pay your last respect. They do not need it, they need it now that they are alive and well so if you have anything to do, do it now. Now is the time because we do not know when God will come.
Friends, I want to encourage you this afternoon, spend time with people around you whenever you can to make them happy, your family, friends and acquaintances, make them feel special because you never know when time will take them away from you. Love them and if they wrong you forgive them, it does not matter, we have a tongue and many teeth but they live together in one mouth, they bite each other but they are always there for each other. You must learn the subject of the tongue and the teeth.
There was a young man called Michael and his wife was Keisha. They loved God and had 3 beautiful children but there was a time, just a few years ago their marriage was in crisis. Michael was submerged in his job just as any caring father will do and Keisha was also busy with the daily care of 3 small children, there was no time at all for each other.
There was not time for communication, no time for growth and no time even for prayer. They were all busy. Michael got involved with another woman and Keisha who was Christ follower, found herself in a difficult place of betrayal. Even when her affair continued, she realized she had to give God everything. Her family, her marriage, her home. One of the biggest things I learnt about forgiveness is that it only takes one person, this is what Keisha said. It takes one person to take the initiative, regardless of if Michael chooses to stay with me or to leave and despite his unrepentant at that time, I was willing to forgive him.
How often do you say I am sorry?
Will you be willing to say you are sorry to people who have wronged you many times? We are in 2022, my message to you is to let go of the past, if you want to see an improvement. Let go of the past and learnt to say you are sorry and also learn to move forward. There are many of us that have family relationships but we do not even talk to them because they stepped on our toes, if you are not able to deal with your own family, how do you deal with someone who is not your family member? How are you betraying you on love?
For God you loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believed in him should not perish but have eternal life. Friends, I just wan you to know that you have to learn to live a life that will prove to friends that you serve a living God who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly and above that which you can think or dream of. We are talking about beyond all relationships, learn to forgive each other. Learn to forgive your friend, forgive your husband, forgive your cousins, forgive that neighbour because if you learn to forgive, God will also forgive you. HE will create a new path for you, he will direct you and make you a success. We just started a brand-new year and month, God is watching. I pray and beg you to have a new attitude.
Let go off the past
I wish someone will call me and say, pastor, after hearing this message, I took a decision to mend my old relationship. Remember time is ticking and we do not know who will go first, I do not know whether I will be going first or you go first. Today is the opportunity you have, mend that relationship, that toxic relationship, make it better so that Jesus will be proud of you. Mend that relationship and continue to love God will all your heart. Then you can truly say that I have lived a life that is pleasant to my father.
In conclusion, the bible says many are called but few are chosen. If he should show up today, will he choose you? It is never about our credentials, it is never about tithing or prayers, it is not about fasting and it is not also bout with we do all in the name of God but it Is about your relationship with God. Allow Jesus to be the centre of your life and he will make a difference in your heart. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy Ghost. Amen.
